Tape
Drives are one of the oldest data storage mediums still
in use today. Their reliability and growth in storage size
over the years has kept them in use around the world. They
can be connected to computer or servers in a variety of manners
including USB, Firewire, IDE and most often SCSI. SCSI is
used most often because of its relatively fast transfer rate
and its heavy use in servers.
Unlike Network Attached
Storage, tape drives are not usually connected
to a network but rather a single computer or server. Tape
drives are most often used as the regularly scheduled backup
medium in servers while using a rotation of tapes to provide
multiple backup copies incase disaster occurs. |
