Turkey Subspecies

There are five recognized subspecies of Wild Turkey found in North America. The following list names the subspecies and gives some basic information about each.
 
Eastern Of the five North American Turkey subspecies this is by far the most plentiful. For these reasons it is also by far the most hunted. It is found in the eastern regions of North America in forests.
Osceola Also known as the Florida subspecies and as it name suggests it occurs naturally in Florida, mostly in the southern part.
Rio Grande This turkey occurs in the semi-arid areas of the plains states. When fully grown the Rio Grande Turkey can be about four feet tall.
Merriam The Merriam subspecies occurs in portions of the mountainous regions of the United States and Canada.
Gould Occurs in Arizona and Mexico. In some north-eastern parts of Mexico this type of turkey is quite plentiful.
