Dealing with Trespassing

Home > Sports & Recreation > Hunting > Safety

Besides actually seeing the trespassers the most obvious sign is unusual tire tracks on your property. Other times it may be necessary to search for other signs such as footprints, garbage and cigarette butts.

Most often trespassers will enter your property from a side road. If you suspect that someone is on your property you can take a drive down any side roads with access to your property and look for suspicious cars parked on the side. Driving these roads regularly will also help because then you will know which cars should and should not be there.

Once a trespasser has already gotten onto your land the best way to stop them from coming back is to take some pictures or video of them. As soon as you suspect that you have a trespassing problem begin to carry a camera on you at all times while out on your property. Having some sort of photo or video evidence will make it much easier for you to get the attention of your local game warden or sheriff and have them put an end to the trespassing.

If you do not already have "No Trespassing" sign on your property it is advisable to do so. Furthermore, once you feel you have a good idea of where the trespassers are entering your property you can put signs up at that location. Often, the simple act of letting the trespasser know you are aware of their presence is enough to keep them away.

Ultimately, when confronted with a trespasser take care to not lose your cool and allow the situation to escalate. It is bad enough that they are already hunting on your property, but starting an argument with them over it is not likely to solve anything.
