When the wind is heavy it can significantly impact your
hunting. The animal you are hunting will have a hard time
hearing your calls, and in turn you may have a hard time hearing
it.
You can modify the types of calls you are using to have more
success in the wind. For turkey hunting try using high-pitched
box calls or any other loud call that will have the best chance
of being heard through the wind. You can also try getting
upwind of the turkey and allow your call to flow in the wind
down to them. Keep in mind that when doing this your scent
will also travel with the wind. |

Finding the funnels that the animal you are hunting uses can
be very effective. It is most often used in deer hunting but
can be used with other animals as well. When looking for funnels
you are looking for fields, lakes or other obstacles force the
deer into a narrow area.
Standing with a good view of these bottlenecks is extremely
effective if you have additional hunters putting pressure on
the deer in other areas and forcing them to become active. One
or two hunters can then stand somewhere with a good view and
cover of the funnel area. |

When hunting earlier in the season the best way to avoid bites
from mosquitoes and other pests is to use headnets and gloves.
Make sure that you have no bare skin showing so the bugs have
a difficult time trying to get to you.
As a secondary benefit it will also provide additional camouflage
while you are hunting. |

If you are afraid to use your call how can you expect to call
in any game? The answer is obviously that you cannot.
There is alot of hype around that using your call can scare
off shy game and this has caused many people to rethink use
of their call. Do not be afraid to use your call or you may
miss out on some of the most interesting hunting out there. |

It is especially important that you are quiet the last few
dozen yards when approaching your hunting stand.
The best way to accomplish this is to rake the leaves and twigs
away from your path to the stand. This way you will be able
to pass through that critical region with minimal noise. |

|
| When walking to your hunting spot take the time to stop and
listen. The key is to walk smarter and be patient. Listening
to the sounds around you can give tips as to where the animals
are around you. This will also give you a much better chance
of not spooking the deer, turkey, etc. Even spooking a rabbit
or squirrel can cause them to alert the other animals around
that a predator is in the area. |

|
| When travelling long distances to reach your hunting destination
it is imperative that you make the least amount of noise possible.
This can be accomplished by sticking to old roads and game trails.
You will need to take the quietest route, not necessarily the
fastest. Avoid brushing up against anything that will make noise
and alert your targets. |

Rubber boots are very effective at minimizing your scent trail.
Leather and other materials tend to hold your scent and take
it with you wherever you go.
Rubber boots are also excellent at keeping your feet warm and
dry which all hunters know is a plus. |
