Calder Memorial Trophy

calder memorial trophyThe Calder Memorial Trophy is awarded to the rookie player who is selected as "the most proficient in his first year of competition."

An individual trophy was awarded to the player selected each year by Frank Calder, NHL President, from the 1936 - 37 season until 1943, when Frank Calder died. From then on, a single trophy was awarded in memory of Frank Calder, and was not to be kept by the player.

The winner of this annual award is decided upon by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. There are a few restrictions in place that a player must qualify for before being eligible to win the Calder Memorial Trophy. First off, the player must not have turned 26 by September 15 of the season. Secondly, the player must not have played more than 25 games the year before, or 6 games in each of the last two years.
