The Canadian Elite Hockey League didn't
last very long. The played one season in 2005 - 2006 and shut
down after one of the four teams (Cape Breton Crush) seized
operations. The semi-professional hockey
league was founded by Harold MacKay, who hoped to attract
university and major junior players to stay at home instead
of traveling overseas to play hockey in European
leagues in the off-season. The four teams listed below played
for the Alexander Cup, which the Saint John Scorpions won
in the only season. Being semi-professional, the player did
receive a salary. Team salary caps were $450,000.
