Electrofishing, as you may tell from the
name, is the process of using electricity to collect fish.
If done correctly, the fish are not electrocuted, but are
directed to the source of the current. The electrical current
contracts the muscles of the fish, basically "forcing"
them to swim towards the pulse. This method is normally used
to collect fish for hatcheries or scientific studies.
If done incorrectly, the fish can either
swim away from the current (low voltage), or fall into unconciousness
(high voltage). Electrofishing can only be
done correctly by a trained professional, as many factors
alter the effectiveness of pulses. A couple of these factors
are minerals in the water, or salinity of the fish, or the
size of the fish. |
