Action
Giving a fly an abnormal drift by dragging it across a current.
 
Back Eddy
The calm spot in the water, where the current changea direction.
 
Brackish
Refers to mostly fresh water, with low levels of salt.
 
Catadromous
Type of fish that breeds in saltwater, but migrates to and lives in freshwater.
 
Catch-and-release
Catch-and-release fishing is the practice of releasing the fish you catch, as opposed to keeping them.
 
Chum
Ground up fish and other seafood (sometimes animals as well) that is used to attract gamefish by dumping it in the water.
 
Dock lines
Pieces of rope that are used to moor a boat to the dock.
 
Dredging
A form of fishing where a curved net is dragged along the bottom of the waterway. This causes a lot of damage.
 
Eddy
An eddy is a calm spot in the water, next to a fast current.
 
Finesse
Slowing down your fishing by using small lures, shorter rods and smaller lines.
 
Floatant
A coating on your dry flies that keeps them from getting soaked in water.
 
Grass
An all encompasing term for vegetation.
 
Hone
Using a stone to sharpen hooks and knifes.
 
Incoming Tide
Refers to the water in a lake or ocean, that is moving towards the shore. This is caused by the gravitational pull of our moon.
 
Jitterbug

A type of lure with a wooden body and a metal lip.

 
Keeper
A legal sized fish, based on local regulations
 
Locators
This is another name for a depthfinder.
 
Lunker
Refers to an overly large sized bass.
 
Merging currents
When two currents come together, a calm spot in the water is created.
 
Net
A net used to catch fish. Usually made from fabric or rubber.
