Precautions for Re-fueling a Boat

Refueling a boat is one of the most dangerous times while out on boating trip. The following list is good reference for the steps to take when you must refuel.

- Shut off all engines and motors
- Tie the boat to something ashore at the refueling station
- Ensure that no open flames exist; no smoking in the vicinity
- No one besides the refueler should be present on the boat
- Turn off any and all electrical devices on the boat
- Close all windows and doors
- Move any portable tanks to the shore
- Before putting the nozzle into the tank ground it against the filler pipe to reduce the risk of fire due to sparks- Do not fill the tank to much or it can spill over- Clean up any fuel which was spilled.
- Before starting the boat back up ensure that all fumes have cleared and there are no leaks
