Hypothermia

Home > Sports & Recreation > Boating

Hypothermia is a common result of someone going overboard in cold water.

Hypothermia occurs when the body temperature of an individual drops below 95 degrees F. Once their temperature drops below 90 degrees F the outcome could certainly be a fatality. For this reason the risk of hypothermia must be taken seriously when travelling in cooler waters. It is also important to note that hypothermia can affect a persons mental functions.

The following list contains the three stages of hypothermia.

Stage 1 - Shivering and signs of slight confusion
Stage 2 - Weak or abnormal pulse, general confusion
Stage 3 - Abnormal or lack of pulse, loss of consciousness

If you see any of these signs it is important to get the person sheltered in a warm, dry place.
