Sultana Disaster

The Sultana was a steam powered paddle-ship. On April 21/1865 the Sultana sank after the boilers onboard exploded while on a trip in the Mississippi River. In this accident more than 1600 peoples lives were lost. 741 people survived this tragedy.
 
Currently, this disaster holds the infamous distinction of being the 'Worst Single Ship Disaster' in the Guiness Book of World Records.
