| On February 15/1982 the semi-submersible oil rig 'Ocean Ranger'
sank about 315km off the Canadian coast. 84 crew members lost
their lives that day, and no one from the rig survived. At the
time of its inception it was considered unsinkable by its manufacturers. |
| |
A large wave came crashing
down on the Ocean Ranger that damaged its control center.
This caused many relays to short out and ultimately lead to
the rig leaning to the side at about 10 degrees. |
|
Rescue efforts by helicopter
and ship were significantly hampered due to the bad weather. |
|
A Canadian Royal Commission
charged with looking into the disaster concluded that a lack
of training of crew members contributed to the disaster. This
was made worse by the design and construction flaws which
existed in the Ocean Ranger oil rig. |
