| On May 7/1915 the Lusitania passenger boat was sunk by a German
U-boat. At the time when this disaster occured the 'rules of
war' disallowed sinking of passenger/commercial ships. |
| The British quickly asserted
that the Germans had commited war crimes, while the Germans
claimed that the Lusitania had been involved with transporting
arms and soldiers. |
When the event first occured
the Germans hailed the sinking as a victory for their side.
International opinion quickly swayed away from them. At this
point the Germans placed the blame on the ship's captain. |
