The Lusitania Disaster

Home > Sports & Recreation > Boating

On May 7/1915 the Lusitania passenger boat was sunk by a German U-boat. At the time when this disaster occured the 'rules of war' disallowed sinking of passenger/commercial ships.

The British quickly asserted that the Germans had commited war crimes, while the Germans claimed that the Lusitania had been involved with transporting arms and soldiers.
When the event first occured the Germans hailed the sinking as a victory for their side. International opinion quickly swayed away from them. At this point the Germans placed the blame on the ship's captain.
