The Honda Point Disaster

Home > Sports & Recreation > Boating

On September 8th/1923 a group of US Navy destroyers attempted to turn into the Santa Barbara Channel. In reality, the destroyers turned towards the rocky shore and headed in that direction. The fog was so bad that visibility was almost nill, so each ship followed the wake of the ship ahead.

Travelling at 20 knots the flagship ran aground. With the other destroyers following closely they too ran aground on the rocky shore. In total 23 men were lost, this number could have been much greater but all available resources acted quickly to assist in the rescue.
Even today the disaster at Honda Point is one of the worst peacetime disasters in US Navy history.
