Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

Home > Sports & Recreation > Boating

On March 24/1989 an oil tanker named the 'Exxon Valdez' ran aground on the Bligh Reef at Prince William Sound in Alaska. About 11 million gallons of oil ended up spilling into the water as a result of the tanker being ruptured.
To clean up the spill initially it cost more than $2.1 billion. Impact to surrounding wildlife was massive and the actual extent will never be known.
The captain of the Exxon Valdez at the time of the disaster was Joseph Hazelwood. He admitted to having at least three drinks before he boarded the ship that fateful night. However, he was acquited of operating a ship while intoxicated.
