On April 6, 2006, 'al-Baraqua II,' a ferry boat, was traveling on the water from Djibouti City to Tadjoura, carrying passengers to a religious festival. It was moving through the Gulf of Tadjoura when the ferry capsized shortly after leaving Djibouti City.

The exact cause of the Djibouti Ferry Accident is still unknown, but it was believed to be due to overcrowding. Known deaths were at 113 a few days after the accident, but it is believed that there were about 200 passengers onboard. An investigation was launched into the sinking by the president of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh.
