Carina Dwarf

Home > Science > Galaxies > List of Galaxies

The Carina Dwarf Spheroidal was discovered by the UK Schmidt Telescope in 1977. It is a part of the Carina constellation and is a dwarf galaxy. This dwarf galaxy has also been referred to as PGC 19441 and E206-G220.

The stars within the Carina Dwarf are about 7 billion years old, making it relatively young compared to the Milky Way. The Carina Dwarf is actually a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, is younger than other Milky Way satellites, and is actually receding from the Milky Way. It is thought that the Carina Dwarf galaxy was formed by two seperate star formation bursts.
