When gravity holds together a cluster of stars, it is referred
to as a galaxy. The galaxy Earth resides in is called
the 'Milky Way.'
The known universe contains three different main types
of galaxies. These are ellipticals, irregulars and spirals.
More information about these specific galaxies can be found
by clicking on their names below.
Dwarf Galaxies
Most of the known galaxies are considered dwarf galaxies.
These are characterized by their relatively small size in
comparison to the Milky Way. Dwarf galaxies are usually
about one hundreth the size of the Mily Way. All dwarf galaxies
can also be classified by elliptical, irregular and spiral.
Active Galaxies
Galaxies emit energy in a number of ways; stars, interstellar
medium and dust. Active galaxies emit energy in other
ways as well. Standard modelling states that supermassive
black holesat the center of the galaxy draws matter into itself.
Some active galaxies emit x-rays, and are seperated into subcategories;
blazars, quasars, and Seyfert galaxies. Radio galaxies are
active galaxies that emit radio frequencies. |
