A verutum was a short javelin primarily
used for skirmishing in-close with the enemy. The light infantry
velites in the Roman army used the verutum
the most. A verutum measures 1.1 meters, with a 13 centimeter
point. Some veruta (plural) were
made with metal shafts, others with metal points.
The Roman army were introduced to the verutum
by the Volsci and Samnites. They used them during 3 BC to
2 BC, but they were taken out of service during the later
years of 2 BC. |
