Throughout time, a military has always
been present in one form or another for most nations. Whether
it was primitive man fighting with rocks and sticks, the Roman
empire with their legions, or current warfare with advanced
technology, the world has never really been without some form
of military presence.
The term 'military' refers to an armed force, but more specifically
a permanent group of professional soldiers. A militia or reserve
forces would not technically be included in the term military,
as these forces are temporary forces called upon when needed.
Loosely used, military means an army.
As stated, most nations have a military
force of some kind. The links below will provide military
information directly related to the country including
rank structure, insignia for the troops, and wars in which
the country participated.
Throughout history, militaries of all shapes
and sizes have been used to resolve, and create, conflict.
Conflicts can range from a world war affecting
all nation as a whole, a conflict between two proper armies,
to a fight between two tribes.
Many strategies and tactics have been unchanged for thousands
of years. Different militaries in different parts of the world
have developed very similar tactics without ever facing each
other. Military history is used and studied
to avoid past mistakes, and build upon tactics that work.
Weapons are any items used with intention
of damaging property or killing people. Technological advancements
in weaponry throughout time have changed
the tide of wars. Most weapons were originally developed for
military use, but many are used by civilians illegally, and
for sports such as hunting
and archery.
