A latte is the term used for any number
of coffee drinks made with hot milk. The literal translation
of latte from Italian to English is "milk". Since
about 1980, the latte has become very popular worldwide. A
'normal' latte, or cafe latte, consists of one third espresso,
two thirds steamed milk, poured and mixed at the same time.
This creates a mild coffee beverage, with a very milky taste.
The differences between many similar coffee drinks can be
seen in the ratio of milk to the froth on top of the drink.
A latte has, as mentioned, one third espresso
and two thirds steamed milk, with one centimeter of froth
on top. A 'flat white' has one third espresso, two thirds
steamed milk, and no froth whatsoever. Lastly, a cappuccino
has one third espresso, one third steamed milk, and one third
froth.
Lattes are a fairly recent development, especially so in
North America. Lattes became popular when Starbucks opened
shop in the 1980s. Prior to this point, if you ordered a latte
in Italian establishments, they would have given you a glass
of milk. |
