Eggnog is a milk based beverage typically consumed
during the winter season. While most people link eggnog with
Christmas, it is not usually associated with a particular
holiday, but is commonly served at Thanksgiving, Christmas
and New Years. Eggnog is more popular in North America
than most places, but is also rather common in the United
Kingdom.
In most cases, eggnog is made from milk, eggs, sugar and
other spices, like nutmeg or cinnamon. it is also seen served
with a topping like whipped cream.
Eggnog is commonly seen in store shelves ready-made,
but can be easily made at home as well. Alcohol can be added
to eggnog as well, as many people add whiskey or rum to make
a nice thick alcoholic holiday drink.
It is believed that eggnog originally came from East Anglia,
England, and was a hot milk beverage served with a strong
ale, called noggin. Back then, eggnog was also called
"egg flip". Since refrigeration of any kind was
very uncommon several hundred years ago, eggnog was enjoyed
by the upper classes of society. |
